Gold IRA Guide: How It Works

A gold IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds permitted precious metals through an IRA trustee. It is not a separate tax category.

Key consideration

Understand account structure, custody, eligible metals and the trade-offs before comparing dealers.

What to understand first

A gold IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds permitted precious metals through an IRA trustee. It is not a separate tax category. This page provides an introductory framework, not a personal recommendation. Check current rules, written agreements and product terms before committing money.

Questions to ask before making a decision

  • What is the complete upfront and ongoing cost?
  • Who is responsible for custody, recordkeeping and insurance?
  • What would it cost, and how long would it take, to sell or withdraw?
  • Which claims are supported by current documents rather than advertising?

How the account is structured

The IRA custodian administers the retirement account, while a dealer sells metals and a depository may store them. Ask which organization performs each role and which agreements govern the relationship.

What changes compared with an ordinary IRA

The IRA tax framework remains relevant, but physical metal adds product eligibility, custody, insurance and resale questions. An IRA does not eliminate commodity-price risk.

Follow the ownership chain

An IRA is the account, not the metal. The custodian maintains the tax-advantaged account; a dealer supplies the metal; an approved trustee or depository arrangement holds eligible bullion. Ask for the legal names of each party and the agreement governing each relationship.

Compare the whole transaction

Request a dated, itemized quote showing the exact coin or bar, quantity, metal spot reference, dealer premium, account charges, storage and insurance. Compare that total with what the dealer would pay to repurchase the same items today.

Consider the exit before entry

A distribution of cash or metal can have tax consequences. Ask the custodian how sales, in-kind distributions and required minimum distributions are handled, including shipping and valuation timelines.

A practical decision checklist

Before taking action, write down the exact account type, product, proposed investment amount, expected holding period and the reason you are considering this option. Obtain a dated written quote and the relevant agreements. Compare the total purchase cost with a same-day resale estimate, then add annual expenses and possible distribution or shipping charges. If any term is unclear, ask the party responsible for that term—not only the salesperson—to explain it in writing. Consider an independent tax or investment professional for account-specific decisions.

What would change the decision?

A materially wider buy–sell spread, an unexpected storage requirement, an ineligible product, an inability to move funds directly, or a lack of emergency liquidity may change the trade-off. Equally, a clear written fee schedule and a product that meets the relevant account rules can make alternatives easier to compare. Neither a free guide nor a promotional deadline replaces this evaluation.
