What to understand first
A useful comparison covers dealer pricing, independent custodian, depository, eligibility, disclosures and liquidation process. This page provides an introductory framework, not a personal recommendation. Check current rules, written agreements and product terms before committing money.
Questions to ask before making a decision
- What is the complete upfront and ongoing cost?
- Who is responsible for custody, recordkeeping and insurance?
- What would it cost, and how long would it take, to sell or withdraw?
- Which claims are supported by current documents rather than advertising?
A practical provider checklist
Identify the dealer, IRA custodian and storage provider separately. Compare product prices, ongoing charges, eligibility checks, insurance arrangements, complaint handling and liquidation procedures.
Verify claims independently
Use primary documents, applicable regulator guidance and dated written quotes. Treat marketing awards and customer reviews as context rather than substitutes for contract terms.
Build a comparison worksheet
Use columns for legal entity, custodian, depository, metal SKU, purchase price, same-day buyback bid, setup fees, annual fees and closure costs.
Compare the entire holding period
A promotion may waive a fee temporarily. Ask what changes after the promotion, what balance is required, and what a partial liquidation costs.
Separate service from suitability
Customer service and fast setup cannot establish that gold exposure fits your goals. Evaluate the investment decision independently from the choice of dealer.
A practical decision checklist
Before taking action, write down the exact account type, product, proposed investment amount, expected holding period and the reason you are considering this option. Obtain a dated written quote and the relevant agreements. Compare the total purchase cost with a same-day resale estimate, then add annual expenses and possible distribution or shipping charges. If any term is unclear, ask the party responsible for that term—not only the salesperson—to explain it in writing. Consider an independent tax or investment professional for account-specific decisions.
What would change the decision?
A materially wider buy–sell spread, an unexpected storage requirement, an ineligible product, an inability to move funds directly, or a lack of emergency liquidity may change the trade-off. Equally, a clear written fee schedule and a product that meets the relevant account rules can make alternatives easier to compare. Neither a free guide nor a promotional deadline replaces this evaluation.
